Floors behave differently in Colorado's dry air, in basements and over radiant heat. These guides were written for Denver Metro homes.

These usually need a moisture check first, and a product approved for those conditions, such as engineered wood, rather than solid planks.

Tell us early. Species, board width and finish all affect how a floor performs over heat.
Flooring over radiant heatHardwood hiding under carpet
Many older Denver homes already have hardwood under carpet that can be refinished instead of replaced.

Questions homeowners ask before they call
How does Colorado's dry climate affect hardwood floors?
Low humidity can pull moisture out of wood, which may cause small gaps between boards in winter, and swings in moisture can lead to cupping or crowning. Acclimating the wood, keeping indoor humidity in a moderate range and choosing stable plank widths all help the floor stay consistent.
Can hardwood go in a Denver basement?
Solid hardwood is generally not recommended below grade or directly on concrete because of moisture risk. Engineered wood, installed after a moisture test and with the right underlayment or adhesive, is usually the better choice for basements and slab-on-grade rooms.
How long does hardwood installation take?
It depends on square footage, subfloor condition and whether the floor is site-finished. A single room may take a day or two, while a whole main level with sanding and finish coats takes longer because each coat needs drying time. We give you a realistic schedule at the estimate.
Is luxury vinyl plank really waterproof?
The planks themselves resist water, so spills and humidity will not damage them. Water can still get under the floor at seams and edges, so subfloor moisture and leaks should be addressed. Waterproof products still need correct installation.
Can I stay in my home during refinishing?
Many people do, with some planning. Rooms are closed off while sanding and curing, and finish odors vary by product. If you have pets, children or sensitivities, tell us so we can recommend a finish and a plan.
Can a few damaged boards be replaced without redoing the whole floor?
Often yes. Individual boards can be cut out and replaced, then blended with the surrounding floor, and a light refinish of the area helps the repair disappear. Matching age, species and color determines how seamless it looks.
